My Year in Travel: 2011

I’ve had a busy travel year, between speaking engagements, conference attendance and a new job. I traveled to many parts of North Carolina, 9 different states, including California 3 times, Texas 3 times, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida and Wisconsin, as well as Washington DC. I also visited 3 different cities in 2 Canadian provinces. Below are some photo highlights. There seems to be a preponderance of water and lighthouses.

Sony: Around The World In 80 Seconds
from Creativity
Photographer Alex Profit and Rapp Collins creative Romain Pergeaux created this stop-motion tour of the world in three weeks using the Sony Cyber-shot HX5V camera.
Here’s Profit on the making of the Around the World in 80 Seconds:
How did the project come about?
Romain Pergeaux, creative with Rapp Collins Paris had the idea for this project, he told me about it and we decided to direct it together.
What was Sony’s involvement?
(Pergeaux) proposed it to Sony, who loved the project. They therefore financed the operation. We were very free in creative production of the film.
What were the technical challenges of doing the video?
Only three weeks to realize this project, 2 persons, without locating points. Released into 8 frames per second, the tour lasts exactly 80 seconds between the GO and the FINISH (640 images), 11.5 seconds per country (92 images). The globe (shot in real life) turned all the 32 images. We had to make a very precise tracking to estimate the distance of entry and exit. Another challenge was to build the bridges between the different cities without knowing what we would find later to continue.

Spring Break
For the kids’ Spring Break this year, we went to Florida and had a jam-packed week. We were busy, but with plenty of time to relax. Our schedule included swimming, a kids museum called the Imaginarium, an amusement park, a little bit of shopping, a boat ride to the beach, mini-golf, lots of eating, Passover Seder and the kids’ favorite activity: riding in the golf cart.

Peter in a hurricane simulator with 45 mph winds, which is really a tropical storm simulator.

Grace with her head in an alligator’s mouth. She does look a little nervous.

Laughing on the Dragon Coaster. The kids rode this 10 times.

Grace on the beach with a bucket and shovel.
Here’s a link to all my photos from the trip.
First Night in Florida
Here are Peter and Grace on our first night in Florida.
Peter and Grace in the Pool
Upon arriving in Florida, the first thing Peter and Grace did after lunch was go to the pool.
New York City Friends
I am in New York City catching up with some old friends. Friends that I haven’t seen since 1980. We met for brunch today at the Fig&Olive and took the above picture after the meal. I will be posting lots more, but just wanted to get this picture up now.
Bikini Clad Plane Promotes Magazine

Photo from Flickr
I am a big fan of decorated airplanes, especially Southwest planes, but this promotional stunt to create the “SI One” and hype the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated, the one issue of the year that generates enough hype on its own, is an odd combination. Not the least because of a recent situation where Southwest kicked a woman off the plane for her revealing outfit.
Now there will be a bleary-eyed salesman in seat 3A looking out through the bikini top of a supermodel.
US Airways Holiday Greeting

I received this image in an email from US Airways. It has a bit of a classic travel poster feel, but it seems modern and current. I definitely like the idea that I am leaving my snowglobe encased winter wonderland and traveling to a tropical locale. I wonder what they sell in the giftshops?
Bye from Florida
We have packed and we are leaving for the airport shortly. The kids and I had a great time in Florida with Grammie and Grandpa Bob. Lots of fun activities including the pool, the beach, a boat ride, the circus, mini-golf, sneaker shopping on Black Friday, and lots of good food. Looking forward to our return to Southwest Florida for Spring Break.
Here are some pictures from our trip.
Black Friday Sneaker Shopping
Every Black Friday, while in Florida, we wake up early and go to the Nike Outlet store in Estero, Florida to buy the kids new sneakers. We have been there as early as 6:00am in the past, but this year we got there about 7:00am.

Please note that in a better world, these three videos would be edited into one, but I haven’t yet been able to make that happen easily. Any suggestions for a PC, and Windows MovieMaker doesn’t recognize the mpeg format from my camera?
