Personal Branding through Social Media

Today I spoke at the Living Arts College @ School of Communication Arts in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was great to speak with students who are learning their digital skills and get them thinking about creating an online personal brand.

The presentation below covers the following topics. Note that the presentation only features images and screenshots. There is not a bullet point or even text throughout the presentation.

  • Introduction to Brand and Personal Brand
  • The Importance of Owning Your Name as a Domain
  • Why You Need to Pick One Appropriate Photo and Stick With It for All Profiles
  • Creating Social Profiles
  • Time for Content
  • What to Blog About

Jeffrey, great presentation on personal branding and thanks for including me!

  2. Dan:

Thanks for the comment. You site is a good example of a small site located at yourname.com. The students were receptive to the idea of personal branding, but had lots of questions about implementation. My hope was to get them thinking about a personal branding approach, so when they get out of school, their online content distinguishes them from other equally qualified job candidates.

  3. Okay, I agree with some of what you put above but maybe the students should focus on being great at what they do. Sure promote themselves but all this focus on “personal branding” is just setting them up for mediocre performance.

Thanks for the comment and I totally agree with you. These students need to learn as much as they can while they are in school and produce the best possible work. I wanted them to start thinking about personal branding and creating an online now so it would be established when they graduate and use it to their benefit in finding work.

  5. Hi Jeff,

This is Chelae Cummings and I was one of the students at Living Arts College. I enjoyed your information and look forward to speaking with you further. I have a few questions, if you have time please contact me at your convenience.

Also, you asked us to send you our websites so you could write us and I have two http://www.chelaecummings.com and http://www.mynameishiv.com.

    Thank you again,
    Chelae

I agree that personal branding is very important for students. When given a choice between 2 candidates with equal skills, many employers would go with the candidate who has a more developed personal brand online (and understanding of how things work online).
